Uses
Used in the management of allergic conditions including allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and other hypersensitivity reactions. The combination of an antihistamine with a corticosteroid provides both histamine blockade and broad anti-inflammatory action.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to either component. Dexamethasone component is contraindicated in systemic fungal infections, uncontrolled diabetes, untreated infections, and in patients receiving live-virus vaccines. Avoid in patients with glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, or peptic ulcer.
Side effects
Chlorpheniramine may cause drowsiness, dry mouth, urinary retention, and blurred vision. Dexamethasone with systemic use can cause hyperglycemia, immunosuppression, adrenal suppression, and Cushingoid effects with prolonged use.
Warnings
Long-term corticosteroid use should be avoided; use the minimum effective duration. Prolonged use may cause systemic steroid side effects. Chlorpheniramine causes sedation; caution in patients operating machinery or driving. Avoid abrupt discontinuation of systemic dexamethasone after prolonged use.
How it works
Chlorpheniramine is a first-generation H1 antihistamine that competitively blocks histamine at H1 receptors, reducing allergy symptoms. Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid that inhibits multiple inflammatory pathways by suppressing cytokine release, prostaglandin synthesis, and cellular immune responses.
Storage
Store below 25°C, away from light and moisture.
