Uses
Indicated for the symptomatic treatment of myasthenia gravis. Also used as an antidote to non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents following surgery.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in mechanical obstruction of the gastrointestinal or urinary tract, and in patients with known hypersensitivity to pyridostigmine or bromide-containing compounds.
Side effects
Common muscarinic side effects include increased salivation, sweating, lacrimation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bradycardia, and miosis.
Warnings
Use with caution in patients with asthma, bradycardia, peptic ulcer, or renal impairment. Overdose can cause cholinergic crisis requiring atropine as antidote.
How it works
Pyridostigmine is a reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, increasing the concentration of acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses and enhancing neuromuscular transmission.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Keep tablets in original packaging.
