Uses
Used as a bulk-forming laxative to relieve constipation and promote regular bowel movements. Also indicated as adjunctive therapy in irritable bowel syndrome and to help lower blood cholesterol levels.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with fecal impaction, bowel obstruction, difficulty swallowing, or known hypersensitivity to psyllium.
Side effects
Common side effects include bloating, flatulence, and abdominal cramping, especially at the start of therapy. Allergic reactions including bronchospasm have been reported rarely.
Warnings
Must be taken with adequate amounts of fluid to prevent esophageal or intestinal obstruction. Patients with diabetes should monitor blood glucose as psyllium may reduce postprandial glucose absorption.
How it works
Psyllium husk is a soluble dietary fiber that absorbs water in the gastrointestinal tract, forming a viscous gel that adds bulk to stool and softens it, stimulating normal peristalsis.
