Uses
A surfactant spermicide used vaginally for contraception. It can be used alone or in combination with barrier methods such as condoms to reduce the risk of pregnancy.
Do not use if
Should not be used by individuals or whose partner is infected with HIV/AIDS. Not recommended as the sole method of protection against sexually transmitted infections.
Side effects
May cause local genital irritation including burning, itching, and rash in either partner. Discontinue use if significant irritation develops.
Warnings
For vaginal use only; not for rectal use. Does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases, and may actually increase the risk of HIV transmission if used frequently. Consult a healthcare provider if irritation persists beyond 48 hours.
How it works
Nonoxynol-9 is a nonionic surfactant that disrupts the lipid membrane of sperm cells, impairing their motility and viability. It exerts its contraceptive effect locally within the vagina.
Storage
Store at room temperature, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
