Uses
Lacidipine is a third-generation dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker indicated for the treatment of hypertension. It may also have antiatherosclerotic properties.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in cardiogenic shock, unstable angina, significant aortic stenosis, and known hypersensitivity to lacidipine or other dihydropyridines.
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, flushing, peripheral edema, palpitations, and dizziness. These are generally dose-dependent and related to vasodilatory effects.
Warnings
Use with caution in hepatic impairment as lacidipine undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism. Blood pressure should be monitored regularly. Abrupt withdrawal is not recommended.
How it works
Lacidipine blocks L-type voltage-gated calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, causing vasodilation and a reduction in peripheral vascular resistance, thereby lowering blood pressure. Its high lipophilicity provides a gradual onset and long duration of action.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light.
