Uses

Indicated as adjunctive or monotherapy for the treatment of partial-onset (focal) seizures in patients 4 years of age and older. It is the active metabolite form of eslicarbazepine acetate.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to eslicarbazepine acetate or oxcarbazepine.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include dizziness, somnolence, diplopia, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Serious reactions include serious dermatologic reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), DRESS, anaphylaxis, hyponatremia, and suicidal ideation.

Warnings

Monitor for suicidal thoughts or behavior. Serious dermatologic reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome may require discontinuation. Monitor serum sodium levels due to risk of hyponatremia. May cause CNS depression; avoid driving until effects are known.

How it works

Eslicarbazepine is the primary active metabolite of eslicarbazepine acetate. It exerts anticonvulsant activity primarily through inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels, stabilizing the inactive state of the channel and reducing repetitive neuronal firing.
