Uses
A non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used as an adjunct to general anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation and provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pancuronium or bromide ions. Use with extreme caution in patients with myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, or severe renal/hepatic impairment.
Side effects
May cause tachycardia and elevated blood pressure due to vagolytic effects. Can cause prolonged neuromuscular blockade, especially in patients with renal or hepatic impairment. Hypersensitivity reactions including bronchospasm are rare.
Warnings
Must only be administered by or under the supervision of experienced anesthesiologists with facilities for artificial respiration immediately available. Reversal with neostigmine may be needed. Not for use outside of controlled clinical settings.
How it works
Pancuronium is a non-depolarizing aminosteroidal neuromuscular blocking agent that competitively antagonizes acetylcholine at nicotinic receptors at the neuromuscular junction, preventing muscle contraction. Its onset is approximately 2–3 minutes and duration of action is 60–90 minutes.
Storage
Store ampoules under refrigeration at 2°–8°C. Protect from freezing and light. Use immediately after opening.
