Uses

Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is used traditionally as a carminative to relieve bloating, flatulence, and digestive discomfort. It is also used in traditional medicine as an expectorant for mild respiratory complaints.

Do not use if

Avoid in patients with known allergy to anise or other plants of the Apiaceae family. Use with caution during pregnancy in amounts exceeding food portions, as large doses may have emmenagogue effects.

Side effects

Generally considered safe when used in food quantities. Occasionally may cause allergic reactions, particularly in individuals sensitive to Apiaceae family plants (such as celery, carrot). Rarely, contact dermatitis may occur.

Warnings

As noted in the FDA labeling, claims are based on traditional homeopathic or herbal practice and are not fully validated by clinical evidence. Individuals with diabetes should consult a physician if the product contains sugar.

How it works

Anise contains trans-anethole as its primary bioactive volatile compound, which is thought to contribute to its carminative, antispasmodic, and mild expectorant properties. The evidence base derives mainly from traditional use and limited clinical studies.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep in an airtight container.
