Uses
Indicated for topical treatment of inflammatory papules and pustules of mild to moderate rosacea. Also used for acne vulgaris due to its antibacterial and keratolytic properties.
Do not use if
No formal contraindications listed. Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to azelaic acid or any component of the formulation.
Side effects
Most common adverse effects are local: burning, stinging, tingling (about 29%), pruritus (11%), scaling or dry skin (8%), and erythema or irritation (4%). Rare cases of hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema have been reported.
Warnings
Hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema, facial swelling, and dyspnea have been reported; discontinue if these occur. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. For external use only.
How it works
The exact mechanism by which azelaic acid treats rosacea is unknown. It possesses antimicrobial activity against Cutibacterium acnes and normalizes keratinocyte proliferation. It also inhibits tyrosinase, providing a mild skin-lightening effect in hyperpigmentation.
Storage
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep tube tightly closed.
