Uses

Benzyl benzoate is a scabicidal and pediculicidal agent used topically for the treatment of scabies caused by Sarcoptes scabiei and, to a lesser extent, for pediculosis (lice infestations).

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to benzyl benzoate. Avoid application near the eyes, mouth, mucous membranes, and on inflamed or broken skin unless directed by a physician. Use with caution in infants and young children due to risk of CNS toxicity.

Side effects

Common local adverse effects include skin irritation, burning sensation, pruritus, and rash at the application site. Rarely, systemic absorption may cause CNS effects including convulsions, particularly if applied to large areas of broken skin.

Warnings

Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes; flush with water immediately if contact occurs. Do not apply to face or scalp in young children. May be flammable; keep away from open flames. The grounding provided does not correspond to benzyl benzoate; clinical information is based on established pharmacological knowledge.

How it works

Benzyl benzoate acts as a neurotoxin to the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, disrupting neuronal membrane function and causing paralysis and death of the parasite. It penetrates the skin and exerts its effect within the burrows of the mite.

Storage

Store at room temperature below 30°C, away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Keep in a tightly closed container.
