Uses
Fosfomycin tromethamine oral granules are indicated for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (acute cystitis) in women caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis. Not indicated for pyelonephritis or perinephric abscess.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to fosfomycin or any component of the formulation.
Side effects
Most common side effects include diarrhea, vaginitis, nausea, headache, dizziness, and asthenia. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea has been reported and may range from mild to life-threatening colitis.
Warnings
Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported; evaluate patients who develop diarrhea post-treatment. Fosfomycin granules for oral solution are for single-dose use only in uncomplicated cystitis; do not use for other UTI types.
How it works
Fosfomycin is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by irreversibly inactivating the enzyme pyruvyl transferase (MurA), blocking the first committed step in peptidoglycan biosynthesis. It achieves high urinary concentrations following oral administration.
Storage
Store in a dry place at room temperature. Single-dose sachets should be used promptly after dissolution. Keep out of reach of children.
