Uses

A combination ophthalmic preparation combining a broad-spectrum antibiotic (chloramphenicol), a corticosteroid (dexamethasone), and a sympathomimetic decongestant (tetryzoline) for bacterial eye infections complicated by inflammation and conjunctival redness.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in viral, mycobacterial, or fungal eye infections. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component. Not for use in patients with ocular hypertension or after intraocular surgery unless under close supervision.

Side effects

Prolonged use may cause increased intraocular pressure, cataract formation, and secondary ocular infections. Chloramphenicol carries a rare risk of aplastic anemia even with topical use. Local burning, stinging, and irritation may occur.

Warnings

Limit duration of use; steroids should not be used for prolonged periods in ophthalmic preparations. Monitor intraocular pressure if used for more than 10 days. Discontinue if superinfection or worsening occurs. Use with caution in the presence of corneal epithelial defects.

How it works

Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Dexamethasone suppresses inflammatory mediators and reduces ocular inflammation. Tetryzoline causes local vasoconstriction to relieve conjunctival hyperemia.

Storage

Store at room temperature below 25°C. Protect from light. Discard 4 weeks after opening.
