Uses

Indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve postprandial glycemic control. It is taken before meals to stimulate rapid, short-duration insulin secretion.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, known hypersensitivity to mitiglinide, and severe hepatic impairment. Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.

Side effects

The most common adverse effect is hypoglycemia. Other effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Weight gain may occur with long-term use.

Warnings

Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. Monitor blood glucose regularly. Risk of hypoglycemia increases with missed meals; patients should be instructed to eat immediately after taking the dose.

How it works

Mitiglinide is a short-acting insulin secretagogue that closes ATP-sensitive potassium channels in pancreatic beta cells, leading to depolarization, calcium influx, and rapid insulin release. It has a faster onset and shorter duration than sulfonylureas.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C, protected from light and moisture.
