Uses
This combination of chlordiazepoxide (a benzodiazepine anxiolytic) and clidinium bromide (an anticholinergic) is indicated for gastrointestinal disorders with an emotional or somatic component, including irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colon, peptic ulcer, and acute enterocolitis.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction, and known hypersensitivity to either component.
Side effects
Side effects reflect both components: drowsiness, confusion, and dependence from chlordiazepoxide; dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, and constipation from clidinium bromide. Respiratory depression may occur with concomitant opioids.
Warnings
Boxed warning: concomitant use with opioids risks profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. High risk of abuse, misuse, and dependence with chlordiazepoxide. Abrupt discontinuation may cause withdrawal seizures.
How it works
Chlordiazepoxide enhances GABA-A receptor activity, producing anxiolytic and muscle-relaxant effects. Clidinium bromide antagonizes muscarinic receptors in the GI tract, reducing intestinal smooth muscle spasm and secretions.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature in a well-closed container, protected from moisture.
