Uses
Used for secondary hyperparathyroidism in dialysis patients and for hypercalcemia associated with parathyroid carcinoma or primary hyperparathyroidism.
Do not use if
Contraindicated when serum calcium is below the normal range at treatment initiation.
Side effects
May cause nausea, vomiting, hypocalcemia, diarrhea, and muscle spasms.
Warnings
Monitor calcium levels closely because severe hypocalcemia may occur.
How it works
A calcimimetic that increases the sensitivity of calcium-sensing receptors and lowers parathyroid hormone levels.
Storage
Store at room temperature.
