Uses

Used as a plasma volume expander for the treatment and prevention of hypovolemia associated with surgery, trauma, or sepsis. It restores and maintains circulatory blood volume when blood or blood products are not immediately available.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in renal failure or renal replacement therapy, sepsis, critically ill patients, intracranial bleeding, severe hypernatremia or hyperchloremia, and known hypersensitivity to hydroxyethyl starch.

Side effects

May cause coagulopathy, acute kidney injury requiring renal replacement therapy, and increased mortality, particularly in critically ill or septic patients. Pruritus (itching) is a common delayed side effect. Anaphylactic reactions are rare.

Warnings

Regulatory agencies (EMA, FDA) have restricted use due to increased risk of renal injury and death in critically ill patients. Monitor renal function and coagulation parameters closely. Discontinue at first sign of renal impairment.

How it works

Hydroxyethyl starch is a synthetic colloid derived from amylopectin. When infused intravenously, it expands plasma volume by exerting oncotic pressure, drawing fluid into the intravascular space. The degree of substitution and molecular weight determine its duration of action and metabolism.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–25°C). Do not freeze. Use immediately once the infusion container is opened.
