Uses

Ivy leaves dry extract (Hedera helix) is used as a mucolytic and expectorant in the symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory bronchial diseases, helping to loosen mucus and ease productive cough.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ivy leaf preparations. Use with caution in patients with gastric ulcers.

Side effects

Uncommon side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Rare cases of hypersensitivity reactions including rash and dyspnea have been reported.

Warnings

Not recommended for use in children under 2 years without medical supervision. Consult a physician if symptoms persist beyond 7 days or are accompanied by fever. Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

How it works

The saponin constituents of ivy leaves, particularly alpha-hederin and hederacoside C, are thought to exert secretolytic and bronchospasmolytic effects by activating beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial cells, thereby increasing mucus fluidity and relaxing bronchial smooth muscle.
