Uses
Used as a mucolytic and expectorant in acute and chronic respiratory conditions involving productive cough with viscous mucus, including bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, and COPD exacerbations.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to acetylcysteine or ivy extract. Use with caution in patients with active peptic ulcer disease.
Side effects
May cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or gastrointestinal discomfort. Rarely, bronchospasm may occur in asthmatic patients with acetylcysteine.
Warnings
Use with caution in asthmatic patients due to risk of bronchospasm. Not recommended in children under 2 years without medical supervision. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist beyond 5–7 days.
How it works
Acetylcysteine breaks disulfide bonds in mucus glycoproteins, reducing viscosity and facilitating expectoration. Ivy leaf extract (Hedera helix) contains saponins (primarily alpha-hederin) that exhibit bronchospasmolytic, secretolytic, and mucolytic properties, enhancing mucociliary clearance.
