Uses

Indicated for the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and stable chronic heart failure to reduce cardiovascular mortality and hospitalizations. As a cardioselective beta-1 blocker in extended-release form, it provides sustained blood pressure reduction and heart rate control.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in severe bradycardia, second or third degree AV heart block, cardiogenic shock, decompensated heart failure, sick sinus syndrome without a pacemaker, and hypersensitivity to the product or its components.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include fatigue, dizziness, depression, bradycardia, hypotension, dyspnea, and diarrhea. May worsen bronchospasm at higher doses. Sexual dysfunction and cold extremities have also been reported.

Warnings

Abrupt discontinuation may exacerbate angina and precipitate myocardial infarction; taper dose gradually. Use with caution in bronchospastic disease. Monitor for worsening heart failure, bradycardia, and AV conduction defects. Avoid concomitant use with verapamil, diltiazem, or clonidine without caution.

How it works

Metoprolol succinate is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker that reduces heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure. It has no intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. The succinate salt in extended-release tablets provides consistent plasma levels over 24 hours.
