Uses

A thrombolytic agent indicated for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, massive pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and arterial thromboembolism when given within the appropriate therapeutic window.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with active internal bleeding, recent cerebrovascular accident, intracranial or intraspinal surgery or trauma, severe uncontrolled hypertension, or prior allergic reaction to streptokinase.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include bleeding (minor to major), fever, and allergic or anaphylactic reactions. Reperfusion arrhythmias may occur. Intracranial hemorrhage is the most serious complication.

Warnings

Administer only in settings where resuscitative measures are available. Hemorrhage may occur at any site. Repeat dosing within 6 months may be ineffective and increase allergic risk due to antibody formation.

How it works

Streptokinase is a bacterial protein that combines with circulating plasminogen to form an activator complex, converting plasminogen to plasmin, which degrades fibrin clots.

Storage

Unopened vials should be stored at 2°C to 8°C (refrigerated). Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or within a few hours if refrigerated.
