Uses
Ginkgo biloba extract is used to improve symptoms of cognitive decline and dementia, peripheral vascular insufficiency, and tinnitus related to vascular origin. It is also used as a general circulatory tonic.
Do not use if
Avoid in patients taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents. Discontinue before surgical procedures. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Ginkgo biloba.
Side effects
Adverse effects include headache, dizziness, gastrointestinal upset, palpitations, and increased risk of bleeding due to inhibition of platelet-activating factor. Allergic skin reactions have been reported.
Warnings
Use with caution in patients with bleeding disorders or those on blood-thinning medications. Clinical evidence for cognitive benefits is mixed; not a proven treatment for Alzheimer's disease.
How it works
Standardized ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) contains flavone glycosides and terpene lactones (ginkgolides and bilobalide). It inhibits platelet-activating factor, scavenges free radicals, and improves microcirculatory blood flow.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C away from direct sunlight and moisture.
