Uses
Indicated for the treatment of steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the eye or ear when bacterial infection or risk of infection is present. Combines broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage with anti-inflammatory corticosteroid activity.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in viral infections of the eye (including herpes simplex keratitis) and fungal infections. Contraindicated in patients with perforated tympanic membrane when used as ear drops. Hypersensitivity to any component is a contraindication.
Side effects
May cause local hypersensitivity reactions including rash, itching, or burning. Prolonged use may lead to secondary infections, increased intraocular pressure, or cataract formation when used in the eye. Neomycin is a common sensitizer causing contact dermatitis.
Warnings
Prolonged ophthalmic use can elevate intraocular pressure; monitor IOP in susceptible patients. Use beyond 10 days should be avoided. Avoid use with perforated eardrum.
How it works
Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis; polymyxin B disrupts gram-negative bacterial cell membranes; prednisolone is a corticosteroid that suppresses local inflammation by inhibiting phospholipase A2 and reducing pro-inflammatory mediator release.
Storage
Store at 2–25°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Discard opened bottles after the recommended period.
