Uses

Benoxinate hydrochloride (oxybuprocaine) is a topical ophthalmic local anesthetic indicated for use in ophthalmic procedures requiring short-term corneal anesthesia, such as tonometry, foreign body removal, and minor surgical procedures.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to benoxinate or other ester-type local anesthetics. Not for prolonged self-administration.

Side effects

Common ocular adverse reactions include transient stinging and burning upon instillation, conjunctival hyperemia, and temporary blurring of vision. Prolonged or abusive use may cause corneal epithelial toxicity, keratitis, and irreversible corneal damage.

Warnings

For professional ophthalmic use only; not to be dispensed for patient self-administration. Patients should avoid touching or rubbing the eye while anesthetized to prevent inadvertent corneal injury. Prolonged use or abuse can result in permanent corneal damage.

How it works

Benoxinate is an ester-type local anesthetic that blocks sodium ion channels in corneal nerve fibers, preventing depolarization and transmission of pain signals. Maximal corneal anesthesia typically occurs within 5–45 seconds and lasts approximately 20 minutes after a single instillation.

Storage

Store at room temperature protected from light. Discard any unused solution after the procedure. Refrigeration may be recommended once opened; consult product labeling.
