Uses

Sorbitol is used as an osmotic laxative for the relief of constipation when administered orally or rectally. It is also used as a urological irrigating fluid during transurethral surgical procedures.

Do not use if

Do not use for urological irrigation in patients with anuria. Not for parenteral injection. Avoid in patients with fructose intolerance (sorbitol is metabolized to fructose).

Side effects

When used as a laxative, common side effects include abdominal cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. Systemic absorption during urological irrigation may cause electrolyte disturbances, fluid overload, acidosis, and edema.

Warnings

Solutions used for urological irrigation must be handled carefully in patients with severe cardiopulmonary or renal dysfunction due to risk of systemic absorption. Oral sorbitol in high doses may cause significant osmotic diarrhea and electrolyte loss.

How it works

As an osmotic laxative, sorbitol draws water into the intestinal lumen by osmosis, softening the stool and stimulating bowel movements. As a hexitol, it is a non-electrolyte that is poorly absorbed, making it suitable for urological irrigation during electrosurgical procedures.

Storage

Store at room temperature. Protect from freezing and excessive heat. Single-dose containers should be discarded after use.
