Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to penciclovir, famciclovir, or any component of the formulation.
Side effects
Local skin reactions such as mild burning, stinging, or numbness at the application site were reported in approximately 3% of treated patients. Systemic absorption is negligible with topical use.
Warnings
For topical use on herpes labialis of the lips and face only; do not apply to mucous membranes. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands after application. Efficacy has not been established when treatment is initiated after blistering has occurred.
How it works
Penciclovir is a deoxynucleoside analog that inhibits herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA polymerase. It is phosphorylated by viral thymidine kinase to the active triphosphate form, which selectively inhibits viral DNA replication with minimal effect on host cell DNA polymerase. Measurable plasma concentrations are not detected following topical application.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature. Keep the tube tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.
