Uses

Ophthalmic preparation indicated for corticosteroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the eye where concurrent bacterial infection or risk thereof exists. Used for inflammatory conditions of the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (including dendritic keratitis, vaccinia, varicella), mycobacterial ocular infections, fungal diseases of the eye, and in patients with hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or any component.

Side effects

Adverse reactions include allergic sensitization to sulfonamide, elevated intraocular pressure, delayed wound healing, secondary ocular infections, and posterior subcapsular cataract formation with prolonged use. Burning and stinging on instillation may occur.

Warnings

Not for injection into the eye. Prolonged use may cause ocular hypertension, glaucoma with optic nerve damage, and posterior subcapsular cataracts. Monitor intraocular pressure regularly if used for 10 days or more. May mask or exacerbate existing infections.

How it works

Prednisolone suppresses the inflammatory response by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators. Sulfacetamide is a bacteriostatic sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial folic acid synthesis. The combination addresses both inflammation and bacterial infection concurrently.

Storage

Store between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Keep from freezing. Protect from light. Keep tightly closed. Discard if solution darkens.
