Uses
An antacid combination indicated for symptomatic relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, and gastric discomfort, including relief of gas and bloating. Magaldrate neutralizes gastric acid; simethicone reduces gas formation and discomfort.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment due to potential aluminum and magnesium accumulation. Severe renal failure is generally a contraindication to aluminum/magnesium-containing antacids.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. May cause constipation or diarrhea depending on dose. Prolonged use with aluminum-containing antacids may lead to aluminum accumulation, especially in patients with renal impairment.
Warnings
Avoid prolonged use without medical supervision. Antacids may interfere with the absorption of other medications; administer other drugs at least 2 hours apart. Use with caution in patients with renal disease. Patients on sodium-restricted diets should check sodium content of the formulation.
How it works
Magaldrate (aluminum magnesium hydroxide sulfate) is a buffered antacid that rapidly and uniformly neutralizes gastric acid, converting it to a normal gastric pH. Simethicone is a non-absorbable silicone polymer that reduces surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating their coalescence and expulsion.
Storage
Store at room temperature below 25°C, away from moisture. Chewable tablets should be kept in the original packaging.
