Uses

Used as a urinary alkalinizer for prevention and management of uric acid and certain calcium-containing kidney stones. It is also used to reduce urinary acidity.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in severe renal impairment, hyperkalemia, and conditions associated with delayed gastric emptying.

Side effects

May cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and electrolyte disturbances.

Warnings

Monitor renal function and serum electrolytes during prolonged therapy.

How it works

Raises urinary pH and citrate levels, reducing stone formation and promoting dissolution of certain urinary calculi.
