Uses

Avocado-soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) are a dietary supplement used to support joint health, particularly in mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee and hip. They may help reduce pain and improve joint function.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to avocado or soy products. Use with caution in patients with soy allergy or latex-fruit syndrome.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated with few reported adverse effects. Mild gastrointestinal discomfort may occur. Patients allergic to avocado or soy should exercise caution.

Warnings

Clinical evidence for efficacy is moderate; it is considered a symptomatic slow-acting drug for osteoarthritis. Not a substitute for analgesic or anti-inflammatory therapy in severe disease.

How it works

Avocado-soybean unsaponifiables are a mixture of plant sterols and other compounds that inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators and promote cartilage matrix synthesis. They modulate cytokine activity and may slow cartilage degradation.
