Uses

Fluorometholone ophthalmic suspension is indicated for the treatment of corticosteroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the eye.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in most viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, including herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, and varicella, as well as mycobacterial and fungal ocular infections, and known hypersensitivity to the drug.

Side effects

Adverse effects include elevated intraocular pressure with possible glaucoma, posterior subcapsular cataract formation, delayed wound healing, and optic nerve damage with prolonged use. Systemic hypercorticoidism may rarely occur.

Warnings

Prolonged use may increase intraocular pressure, leading to glaucoma or optic nerve damage, and may suppress host immune responses, increasing susceptibility to secondary ocular infections. Regular monitoring of intraocular pressure is advised.

How it works

As a corticosteroid, fluorometholone inhibits the inflammatory response by suppressing edema, capillary dilation, leukocyte migration, and collagen deposition. It is relatively less likely to elevate intraocular pressure compared to some other ophthalmic steroids.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature. Protect from freezing. Keep bottle tightly closed when not in use.
