Uses
Meclofenoxate (centrophenoxine) is used as a cerebral activator and nootropic to improve cognitive function, memory, and concentration, particularly in age-related cognitive decline and cerebrovascular insufficiency.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to the drug, severe hypertension, acute psychotic states, and in patients with marked agitation. Use with caution in epilepsy.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. May cause mild insomnia, restlessness, nausea, or tremor at higher doses. Rare hypersensitivity reactions have been reported.
Warnings
Avoid use in patients with acute confusional states or severe psychiatric disorders. May potentiate stimulant effects if combined with other CNS stimulants. Safety in pregnancy and lactation not established.
How it works
Meclofenoxate is an ester of dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) and para-chlorophenoxyacetic acid. It is thought to increase brain acetylcholine levels, improve neuronal membrane fluidity, reduce lipofuscin accumulation, and enhance cerebral oxygen utilization.
