Uses

Bromocriptine is indicated for hyperprolactinemia-associated conditions including amenorrhea, galactorrhea, infertility, and hypogonadism. It is also used to treat prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas and Parkinson's disease.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to bromocriptine or any ergot alkaloid. Also contraindicated in uncontrolled hypertension. Should be withdrawn if pregnancy is diagnosed during treatment for hyperprolactinemia.

Side effects

The most frequent side effects are nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and lightheadedness, especially at the start of treatment. Less common effects include orthostatic hypotension, vomiting, and constipation.

Warnings

A complete pituitary evaluation should be performed before starting therapy if hyperprolactinemia is the indication, to exclude pituitary tumors. If pregnancy occurs, the drug should generally be discontinued and close monitoring instituted.

How it works

Bromocriptine is a dopamine receptor agonist that activates post-synaptic dopamine receptors. It inhibits prolactin secretion from the anterior pituitary by mimicking the action of dopamine, the endogenous prolactin inhibitory factor.

Store at room temperature (15–30°C), protected from light. Keep in a tightly closed container.
