Uses

Aescin (escin) is indicated for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and post-traumatic edema. It reduces capillary permeability and improves venous tone, alleviating symptoms such as heaviness, swelling, and pain in the lower limbs.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) or any component. Should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment.

Side effects

May cause gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, stomach discomfort, and diarrhea, particularly with oral formulations. Local skin irritation may occur with topical use. Pruritus and allergic reactions are reported rarely.

Warnings

Avoid applying topical preparations to broken skin or open wounds. Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation. Monitor renal function with prolonged use of systemic formulations.

How it works

Aescin is a mixture of triterpenoid saponins derived from horse chestnut seeds. It inhibits lysosomal enzymes that degrade proteoglycans in the capillary wall, reducing vascular permeability and improving capillary resistance. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous effects.

Storage

Store at room temperature below 25°C, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
