Uses

Temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation from the common cold or inhaled irritants. Guaifenesin loosens phlegm and thins bronchial secretions; dextromethorphan suppresses the cough reflex.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients currently taking or within 2 weeks of stopping a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Dextromethorphan can cause serotonin syndrome when combined with MAOIs.

Side effects

May cause nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness. Stop use if symptoms worsen, persist beyond 7 days, or are accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache.

Warnings

Do not use with MAOIs. Store at room temperature; do not refrigerate. Each 20 mL contains sodium 8 mg — low sodium formulation. Use the minimum effective dose and avoid exceeding recommended dosage.

How it works

Dextromethorphan is a centrally acting antitussive that elevates the cough threshold by acting on sigma-1 receptors in the medullary cough center. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that increases respiratory tract fluid, reducing mucus viscosity and facilitating expectoration.
