Uses

Used for travelers' diarrhea caused by susceptible noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli, reduction of recurrent hepatic encephalopathy, and certain cases of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to rifaximin, rifamycins, or formulation components.

Side effects

Headache, nausea, constipation, abdominal pain, dizziness, fatigue, and peripheral edema may occur.

Warnings

Not effective for diarrhea associated with fever, blood in stool, or pathogens resistant to rifaximin. Evaluate persistent diarrhea.

Rifamycin antibacterial that inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis with minimal systemic absorption after oral administration.
