Uses

Indicated for temporary relief of signs and symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. Also used for treatment of post-operative ocular inflammation and other steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella), mycobacterial ocular infections, fungal diseases of ocular structures, and in patients with known hypersensitivity to the product.

Side effects

Ocular adverse effects include elevated intraocular pressure, posterior subcapsular cataract formation, and secondary ocular infections. Transient burning or stinging on instillation may occur.

Warnings

Prolonged use may cause glaucoma with optic nerve damage and posterior subcapsular cataracts. Prolonged corticosteroid use may suppress host immune response leading to secondary infections. Monitor intraocular pressure in all patients on prolonged therapy. Masking of acute purulent infections is possible.

How it works

Loteprednol etabonate is a retrometabolically designed corticosteroid that inhibits the inflammatory response including edema, capillary dilation, leukocyte migration, and collagen deposition. It undergoes predictable metabolism to inactive compounds, reducing systemic exposure and steroid-related side effects.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature (15°C–25°C). Protect from freezing. Shake well before use.
