Uses
Chondroitin and glucosamine are used as dietary supplements to support joint health and may help reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis, including joint pain and stiffness, particularly in the knee.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component. Patients with shellfish allergy should avoid glucosamine from shellfish sources unless a plant-based alternative is used.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. Mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, or constipation may occur. Patients with shellfish allergy should use caution as glucosamine is often derived from shellfish.
Warnings
Clinical evidence for efficacy in osteoarthritis is mixed. These are supplements, not approved drugs for osteoarthritis in most markets. Patients on warfarin should monitor INR as chondroitin may have anticoagulant properties.
How it works
Glucosamine is a precursor for glycosaminoglycans, structural components of articular cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate inhibits degradative enzymes and may support water retention in cartilage matrix. Combined use may have complementary structural and anti-inflammatory effects on cartilage.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–25°C) in a dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
