Uses

Indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci in patients who are allergic to penicillin or for whom penicillin is otherwise inappropriate. Should be reserved for serious infections where other antibiotics are unsuitable.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to lincomycin or clindamycin.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) ranging from mild to severe colitis may occur. Serious dermatological reactions including toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been reported.

Warnings

CDAD has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents, including lincomycin, and may be severe or fatal. Monitor for diarrhea during and after treatment. Reserve for serious infections and consider alternative antibiotics when possible.

How it works

Lincomycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis. It is bacteriostatic at usual concentrations and may be bactericidal at high concentrations against susceptible organisms. Achieves good tissue penetration including bone.

Storage

Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F). The container closure is not made with natural rubber latex.
