Uses
Trospium chloride is a muscarinic antagonist indicated for the treatment of overactive bladder with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and urinary frequency.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with urinary retention, gastric retention, uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, or known hypersensitivity to trospium or its ingredients.
Side effects
Most common adverse reactions are dry mouth, constipation, and headache. Urinary retention, blurred vision, tachycardia, and confusion (especially in the elderly) may also occur.
Warnings
Use with caution in patients with bladder outflow obstruction, GI obstructive disorders, or risk of urinary retention. Monitor elderly patients for CNS effects. Angioedema has been reported.
How it works
Trospium chloride antagonizes muscarinic receptors in the bladder, reducing smooth muscle tone and detrusor overactivity. It has negligible affinity for nicotinic receptors and does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature, 20–25°C (68–77°F).
