Uses
Used for symptomatic relief of gastrointestinal disturbances including bloating, flatulence, abdominal cramps, and irritable bowel syndrome. These carminative oils help relax intestinal smooth muscle.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to anise or peppermint. Avoid in patients with cholestasis or gallbladder disorders. Not recommended in infants and young children.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include heartburn, perianal burning, and allergic reactions. Peppermint oil may worsen gastroesophageal reflux in some patients.
Warnings
Avoid high doses in pregnancy due to potential uterine stimulant effects of anise oil. Keep enteric-coated capsules intact to prevent esophageal irritation.
How it works
Anise oil contains anethole and peppermint oil contains menthol, both of which exert antispasmodic effects on intestinal smooth muscle. They also have carminative properties that reduce gas production and promote its expulsion.
