Uses

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent used topically for the treatment of acne, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and hyperkeratotic skin conditions such as warts and calluses.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to salicylic acid. Avoid use on broken, inflamed, or infected skin. Not recommended for infants and young children.

Side effects

Common side effects include local skin irritation, dryness, peeling, and erythema. Excessive application over large areas may lead to salicylate toxicity with symptoms such as tinnitus and dizziness.

Warnings

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and healthy surrounding skin. Do not use under occlusion over large body surface areas due to risk of systemic absorption.

How it works

Salicylic acid exerts keratolytic activity by reducing corneocyte cohesion and promoting desquamation. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and comedolytic properties, making it effective in acne management.
