Uses
Used as a probiotic supplement to support gastrointestinal health. Has evidence for reducing colic in infants, managing diarrhea (including antibiotic-associated diarrhea), and modulating gut microbiota. Some evidence supports its use in H. pylori eradication regimens.
Do not use if
Use with caution in severely immunocompromised patients, as rare cases of bacteremia have been reported with probiotics in this population. Discontinue if signs of systemic infection occur.
Side effects
Generally very well tolerated. Mild gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating or flatulence may occasionally occur at initiation. Serious adverse effects are exceedingly rare in immunocompetent individuals.
Warnings
Not a substitute for medical treatment of infectious diarrhea or other gastrointestinal diseases. Refrigerate live culture preparations to maintain viability. Inform healthcare providers about probiotic use if immunosuppressive therapy is considered.
How it works
Lactobacillus reuteri is a gram-positive lactic acid bacterium naturally present in the human gut. It colonizes the intestinal mucosa, produces reuterin (a broad-spectrum antimicrobial), modulates local and systemic immune responses, and competitively inhibits adhesion of pathogens to the gut epithelium.
Storage
Refrigerate at 2–8°C. Keep away from heat and moisture. Some formulations may be stored at room temperature; follow the label instructions.
