Uses

Used topically for the treatment of dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp, and tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor). It reduces scaling and itching associated with these conditions.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to selenium sulphide. Should not be applied to inflamed, broken, or abraded skin. Avoid contact with eyes.

Side effects

May cause scalp irritation, increased hair oiliness or dryness, and temporary hair discoloration with prolonged use. Systemic toxicity is possible if large amounts are accidentally ingested.

Warnings

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Wash hands thoroughly after use. Do not use on acutely inflamed scalp. Selenium sulphide may damage jewelry and should be removed before application.

How it works

Selenium sulphide has antifungal and cytostatic properties. It reduces the turnover rate of epidermal cells and is thought to inhibit the growth of Malassezia (Pityrosporum) fungi, which are associated with dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep container tightly closed.
