Uses

Long-acting basal insulin analog indicated to improve glycemic control in adults and pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated during episodes of hypoglycemia and in patients with hypersensitivity to insulin glargine or any of its excipients.

Side effects

Hypoglycemia is the most common and serious adverse effect. Other reactions include injection site reactions (pain, redness, lipodystrophy), weight gain, peripheral edema, and allergic reactions including rare anaphylaxis. Hypokalemia may occur.

Warnings

Never share pens or needles between patients due to infection risk. Changes in insulin concentration, type, or manufacturer require close monitoring. Monitor for hypokalemia especially when combined with potassium-lowering agents. Dose adjustment required in renal or hepatic impairment.

How it works

Insulin glargine is a recombinant long-acting human insulin analog with substitutions at the A and B chains that shift its isoelectric point, causing microprecipitation at the injection site. This results in a slow, sustained, peakless release providing 24-hour basal coverage. It lowers blood glucose by stimulating peripheral uptake and inhibiting hepatic glucose output.

Storage

Unopened: refrigerate at 2–8°C; do not freeze. In-use pens: store at room temperature below 30°C for up to 28 days; do not refrigerate after first use. Protect from light and heat.
