Uses
The combination of vitamins A and E is indicated as an antioxidant supplement to support skin integrity, immune function, and general nutritional status. Topically, vitamin A supports epithelial cell regeneration and vitamin E provides emollient and antioxidant protection, commonly used in dry or damaged skin conditions.
Do not use if
High-dose oral vitamin A is contraindicated in pregnancy due to teratogenic risk. Avoid excessive supplementation in patients with liver disease or those already taking retinoid medications. Vitamin E should be used with caution in patients on anticoagulant therapy.
Side effects
Topically applied, both vitamins are generally well tolerated. Systemic oral use: vitamin A in excess can cause hypervitaminosis A (headache, nausea, liver toxicity, teratogenicity). High-dose vitamin E supplementation may increase bleeding risk by inhibiting platelet aggregation.
Warnings
Keep out of reach of children. Accidental overdose of iron-containing products (if combined in a multivitamin) is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in young children. Do not exceed recommended doses of vitamin A during pregnancy.
How it works
Vitamin A (retinol) supports epithelial cell differentiation and mucous membrane integrity via nuclear retinoid receptors, and is essential for vision (rhodopsin cycle). Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a lipid-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals.
