Uses

Indicated by intravenous or intramuscular routes when oral therapy is not feasible, for severe allergic conditions, dermatologic diseases, endocrine disorders (e.g., adrenocortical insufficiency), rheumatic disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, respiratory conditions such as severe asthma, and shock.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in systemic fungal infections and in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component. Intramuscular use is contraindicated in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Intrathecal administration is contraindicated.

Side effects

Short-term use is generally well tolerated. Potential effects include hypertension, fluid retention, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, mood disturbances, and increased susceptibility to infection. Prolonged use causes adrenal suppression, osteoporosis, and cushingoid features.

Warnings

Serious and fatal neurologic events have been associated with epidural injection of corticosteroids; this route is not approved. Use with caution in patients with diabetes, hypertension, peptic ulcer, or active infections. Gradual tapering is needed after prolonged therapy to avoid adrenal crisis.

How it works

Hydrocortisone sodium succinate is a water-soluble glucocorticoid ester for parenteral use. Glucocorticoids exert anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by binding to intracellular receptors and modulating gene transcription. Naturally occurring hydrocortisone also has mineralocorticoid activity.

Storage

Store unreconstituted product at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Store reconstituted solution at controlled room temperature and use within the manufacturer's recommended timeframe.
