Uses
Indicated for the prevention and treatment of calcium and vitamin D deficiency, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and as supplemental calcium support in conditions of increased calcium demand such as pregnancy, lactation, and growth periods.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, hypervitaminosis D, and severe renal impairment. Avoid in sarcoidosis and other granulomatous diseases associated with increased vitamin D sensitivity.
Side effects
May cause constipation, flatulence, nausea, and abdominal discomfort. Hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria can occur with excessive doses. Vitamin D toxicity is possible with long-term high-dose supplementation.
Warnings
Monitor serum calcium and renal function with long-term use. Calcium carbonate should be taken with meals to enhance absorption. Interactions may occur with certain antibiotics (tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones) and iron supplements if taken simultaneously.
How it works
Calcium carbonate provides elemental calcium that is essential for bone mineralization. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is converted to its active form calcitriol, which increases intestinal calcium and phosphorus absorption and promotes bone remineralization.
