Uses

A nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents, particularly in patients who are intolerant of or have failed other NRTIs.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to stavudine. Concurrent use with zidovudine is not recommended due to pharmacological antagonism.

Side effects

Serious adverse effects include peripheral neuropathy, lactic acidosis with hepatic steatosis, and lipoatrophy. Common effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, and rash.

Warnings

Risk of potentially fatal lactic acidosis and hepatic steatosis. Fatal cases of pancreatitis have been reported. Peripheral neuropathy may be irreversible. Use with caution in patients with hepatic disease.

How it works

Stavudine is a thymidine analogue that, after intracellular phosphorylation, inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by competing with thymidine triphosphate and causing DNA chain termination.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature between 15°C and 30°C. Protect from excessive moisture.
