Uses

Indicated to improve glycemic control in adult and pediatric patients with diabetes mellitus. It is a rapid-acting insulin analog used to manage postprandial blood glucose elevations.

Do not use if

Contraindicated during episodes of hypoglycemia and in patients with known hypersensitivity to insulin lispro or any of the product excipients.

Side effects

The most common adverse reaction is hypoglycemia. Allergic reactions, including local injection site reactions, may occur. Hypokalemia has also been reported.

Warnings

Never share pens or syringes between patients even if the needle is changed. Changes in insulin regimen, manufacturer, or concentration can affect glycemic control. Monitor for hypoglycemia and hypokalemia. Systemic absorption may cause cardiovascular and respiratory effects.

How it works

Insulin lispro is a rapid-acting human insulin analog that lowers blood glucose by stimulating peripheral glucose uptake in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue and by inhibiting hepatic glucose production. It also inhibits lipolysis and proteolysis and promotes protein synthesis.

Storage

Store unopened vials and pens refrigerated at 2–8°C. Once in use, may be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) and should be discarded after the period stated in the product labeling.
