Uses

Used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter in patients who cannot use methimazole. It may also be used before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment.

Do not use if

Hypersensitivity to propylthiouracil or any component of the formulation.

Side effects

May cause rash, itching, nausea, joint pain, and taste disturbances. Serious reactions include liver injury, agranulocytosis, and vasculitis.

Warnings

Severe and potentially fatal liver injury may occur. Monitor for signs of hepatic dysfunction and blood disorders.

How it works

Inhibits thyroid hormone synthesis and reduces peripheral conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3).

Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.
